 War on pokies flares again

War on pokies flares again

30 Jan, 2011 08:37 PM
THE City of Ballarat has fired its next shot in a declared war on electronic gaming machines.

Council voted unanimously this week to amend its pokie policy to reduce its current 663 cap by about 30 per cent.

Cr Ben Taylor, who proposed the move, called pokies a “leech” on the Ballarat community.

He called the current cap unacceptable, exceeding both Bendigo and the state average.

“It’s imperative we send a clear message to the community and the state government on this issue,” Cr Taylor said.

“The harm on our community is huge and it’s growing every year.

“Council has to amend its electronic gaming maching policy to clearly articulate that the current gaming machine cap of 663 machines for Ballarat is unacceptable.”

Ballarat currently has 14 venues that host 657 EGMs, with 9.3 machines per 1000 adults, according to the council’s EGM policy document.

This compares with 7.1 machines per 1000 adults in Bendigo (547 pokies) and a state average of 6.4.

While the drop will not result in an immediate change in the number of machines currently available to Ballarat punters, it would enable council to more effectively fight pokie venue applications, Cr Taylor said.

His motion means the city will now request the State Government reduce the Ballarat gambling cap to the state average, cutting it by about 200 machines.

“The only way we can stop pokies popping up is to reduce the cap,” Cr Taylor said.

“Then we can justify refusing these applications, otherwise it puts council in a bad financial position to fight something that’s unwinnable.

“Every time we go to VCAT we don’t have a leg to stand on unless we say we want a reduction.”

At the same meeting an application by the Red Lion Hotel for nine extra machines was refused.

Council discussions regarding 30 more EGMS at the Mercure Hotel were held in camera, as the matter is currently before VCAT.

Council refused the application in October and a council source said council’s position had not changed.

Good on you BCC for taking the step in halting these machines. Leeches is the right word to use!

Congratulations to Ballarat City Council. It's wonderful to see a council standing up for the people they serve. Bendigo Council could take a leaf from your book! We know that the state government are as ashamed and addicted to these things as the people hooked on them. The State government have the ultimate say, but at a local level any small effort to reduce the harmful effects should be loudly applauded. Keep fighting the good fight.

Looks like the council is trying to take a hard stand, why they stuffed the city up in the first place its a bit to late for this useless council now need a fresh start.

How about they put more effort into a war against feral thugs and abusive drunks? Money and effort better spent, I think.

Well done, Cr Ben Taylor. It's about time someone had the courage to say enough is enough. Perhaps some of those dim-wits who work at the Council will sit up and take notice. Nice one!

We'll wait and see if the party that Cr Taylor ran for moves in the same direction. I suspect that had he been elected, Ben like many others would have quickly followed the party line and his opinion that it was an "imperative" to make changes.

That said, well done to the Ballarat City Council for standing up.

Well done, Ben! You're the only councillor with any guts. You take the big issues seriously.

I only hope the council officers will understand their real job and implement these policies as intended rather than with their usual political spin

when government thinks it needs to limit access to a legal device, you lose your liberty.
