UP to 30 Ballarat staff face an uncertain future after Westpac announced a proposed restructure of its country business direct division.Finance Sector Union spokesperson Leanne Shingles yesterday said staff may have to move or commute to Melbourne if the restructure goes ahead.Westpac's country business direct division works on small and medium-sized business accounts."It is only a proposal at this stage but up to 30 Ballarat workers could be impacted," Ms Shingles said. She said the FSU would work with the bank to make sure any affected staff were redeployed."In regional areas, opportunities can be quite limited," Ms Shingles said."This would have an impact on the local community (and) an impact on local workers and families."If there is no opportunity here in Ballarat, they may have to commute or move to Melbourne."Ms Shingles said Westpac had given staff until April 3 to provide feedback on the proposal. If it goes ahead, the restructure would take 15 months to implement.
