DAYLESFORD massaged its way into the record books yesterday with more than 500 people taking part in the world's largest ever simultaneous massage.Purple massage mats were lined up in rows at the Lavandula Lavender Farm, manned by 263 massage therapists each with a willing participant ready to be pampered. The record-breaking attempt, organised by Tourism Victoria, smashed the former world record of 167, set in Washington DC, last year.Hosted by Australian model and TV presenter Sophie Falkiner, it created a beautiful display in the lush, green gardens of Lavandula.Other celebrities spotted in the crowd included Today Show host Steve Jacobs and Olympian Grant Hackett.Lavandula owner Carol White said it was an amazing day."It was so beautiful, the mist and the shadows, such a Daylesford day,'' she said."Lots of people turned up, more than we expected and more than what had registered, and we ended up with 263 couples massaging."Most of the people being massaged and masseurs were locals or had a local connection.''The simultaneous massage lasted for 12 minutes and when the record was broken cheers rang out.Guinness Book of Records adjudicator Chris Sheedy said the event was an historic moment for Daylesford with abundant enthusiasm from local spa and massage therapists. "I've seen a whole lot of wonderful events around the world, but during the past decade I have never seen such a beautiful record attempt," he said. Inspired by Spencer Tunick, Massage en Masse was part of Tourism Victoria's $7.3 million Daylesford: Lead a double life tourism campaign and showcased what the region has to offer. Each participant received a goodie-bag full of local treats such as wine, mineral water and other delicacies.
