A field of 109 riders, including 13 women, took on the new seven kilometre course for the third running of the annual Ballarat-Sebastopol Cycling Club MTB race yesterday.
After just over 50km of brutal terrain and equally challenging weather, Phil Orr won the men’s open category, completing nine laps of the circuit in three hours and eight minutes.
The 37-year-old from Redan, finished ahead Ben May, who also completed nine laps in a time of three hours, 19 minutes.
In third place was Bradley Erickson with nine laps in three hours and 23 minutes.
In the women’s open event, Lee Schultz completed seven laps in three hours, seven minutes.
April McDonaugh was second, with seven laps in three hours, 23 minutes, while Tracy Esterhuyzen completed six laps in two hours, 59 minutes.
“Every year we have hosted the event it has rained and the event now has a bit of a reputation for destroying bikes,” official time keeper Paul Mathers said.
“It was pretty neck-and-neck for two laps but over the course of the event the conditions and the course took their toll and the field started to spread out.”
The Rebellion MTB Enduro is the first round of a four round Inter-winter Series, hosted by Ballarat Sebastopol Cycling Club and three other clubs: Geelong Mountain Bike Club, Castlemaine Rocky Riders and Full Gas Peddlers from Melbourne.
The series fields riders from across Victoria, the youngest rider being 11-year-old Piper Albrecht.
