GOOD mates for more than 30 years, Mick Leckie and Steve O’Loughlin think it is only fitting they share a major cricket milestone. The Golden Point duo have added to a decorated club honour roll as 200-gamers in the Ballarat Cricket Association.O’Loughlin achieved the feat this round, lining up in the seconds against Mt Clear.Leckie chalked up his 200th game last month against Coronet City with the thirds and almost thought it had slipped by until the club marked it alongside O’Loughlin. They have played countless games alongside each other, the most significant being a club firsts premiership in 2001/02 – Point’s last taste of premiership glory.Plus they have two seconds premiership wins on record together. They will re-live the 2001/02 flag win tonight in a premiership reunion.O’Loughlin said it was all good timing.“It’s nice being able to get 200 games around the same time,” O’Loughlin said.“We grew up a block away from each other in Buninyong and played all our junior and senior cricket together.”O’Loughlin ventured to Point first, with Leckie arriving a season or so later for the 1993/94 summer.Mick “Rowdy” Leckie, a right-arm off-spinner, has taken 305 wickets at 19.34 runs in his 200 games with Point. He has been effective with the bat, chalking up 2338 runs, averaging 18.41, with a highest score of 103.Leckie said he was starting to slow his game down now and mostly enjoyed a social hit.“It’s a good milestone, especially to have done it playing with a bunch of great fellas,” Leckie said.“We’ve forged many great friendships throughout the years.”O’Loughlin, a former firsts captain and club coach, still pits his game at the top Point levels, stepping up in the firsts where needed and mentoring in the seconds. He said the club’s future was in its younger players and helped out where needed but was gradually easing back his commitments to spend more time with his young family. The seasoned all-rounder and Golden Point Team of the Century cricketer has notched up 5501 runs, including eight centuries and 27 half-centuries, with an average of 30.06.He has taken 72 catches and captured 152 wickets at 20.98 runs.Leckie and O’Loughlin agreed they were lucky to have played alongside some of Ballarat’s best cricketers at Point including Neil Lee, Matt Kelton, Peter LeLievre, Peter Appleton (who is still playing firsts) and Chris Bambury, who is now playing in Geelong. And they were lucky to have Ballarat’s premier cricket ground, Eastern Oval, as their home base.O’Loughlin said they had seen plenty of changes about the club but one of the key components maintained was the club’s “vibrant social life”.“It’s definitely one of the funniest clubs to be a part of – there’s no shortage of nicknames or humour around the place,” O’Loughlin said.“We were saying the other day, we wouldn’t want to play for any other club.“We’re both pretty happy with our time here.”
