Roosters full-tilt at mystery Magpies

MYSTERY surrounds exactly who will line up for Collingwood against North Ballarat in a do-or-die Victorian Football League preliminary final at Port Melbourne today.Speculation was rife yesterday that the Magpies' number-one ruckman Josh Fraser might be a late call-up for Collingwood to face Geelong in the AFL preliminary final tonight. He has been selected to go head-to-head with VFL team of the year ruckman Orren Stephenson, as well as being an emergency in the AFL.However, Collingwood's AFL coach Mick Malthouse gave every indication yesterday that Fraser, who is back after recovering from a knee injury, would be a late inclusion to take on the Cats."There's no guarantee he's out," Malthouse said. "He wouldn't be named if he wasn't (fit)." Even Collingwood midfielder Dayne Beams seems a possibility to move up after training impressively yesterday. There are no such questions for North Ballarat, with the Selkirk Roosters at full strength. After being a little unsettled late in the home-and-away season as a result of North Melbourne giving fringe players a run, North Ballarat knows exactly where it stands and what is expected of it.And it holds no fear. North Ballarat has proven this to get this far. This is the third year in a row under the guidance of head coach Gerard FitzGerald that the Roosters have played in a preliminary final. Two seasons ago Geelong ran over the top of North Ballarat.Like Collingwood, Geelong is a stand-alone AFL outfit, but that is where the parallels end.It is a much different scenario now.The Roosters are the reigning premier and a much more mature combination - in the experience of its own VFL list and in its relationship with North Melbourne.Shaune Moloney, Matt Sharkey, Michael Searl, Brett Goodes, Jacob Spolding, Dan Feery, Tom Roach, Stephenson and Steve Clifton all played in the hiding at the hands of Geelong in 2007.They front up again today much tougher and better equipped to tackle and eclipse AFL-listed opponents. There is also a new vibrancy provided by VFL best and fairest Myles Sewell, Marcus White and Cruize Garlett, and crucial experience in Shannon Watt, Corey Jones, Aaron Edwards and Marc Greig.North Ballarat has already shown what it is capable of by bouncing back from an opening-round thrashing at the hands of Port Melbourne and rebounding hard after three mid-season defeats in a row to secure the minor premiership for the first time.As impressive as Collingwood appears on paper with Paul Medhurst, Nathan Brown, Anthony Rocca and possibly Fraser, the Magpies have much to fear from North Ballarat. The Roosters' record speaks for itself. And they will be tougher than usual with a second grand final appearance and a chance at back-to-back flags.
