NORTH BALLARAT takes a wealth of attacking power into battle with Tasmania in the Victorian Football League in Hobart today. The return of North Melbourne-listed Josh Smith gives the Selkirk Roosters potentially five big key forwards.Smith lines up alongside Paul McMahon, and North Melbourne team-mates Michael Wundke, Aaron Edwards and Robbie Tarrant. The combination of McMahon, Smith and Wundke has worked extremely well and been instrumental in developing North Ballarat into a premiership contender.Although all are big-marking goal kickers, they have developed an understanding with each other and the Roosters' midfield to provide options which have stretched the best defences in the competition.Coach Gerard FitzGerald now has a dilemma. He has to ensure that he does not compromise the asset he has with McMahon, Smith and Wundke, while reaping the benefits of having a talent like VFL century goal-kicker and JJ Liston Trophy winner Edwards, and also providing the promising Tarrant with opportunities. It is a balancing act FitzGerald is not complaining about. This is only Edwards' second VFL senior appearance since returning from a broken leg and one big game could well see him lining up for North Melbourne in the AFL finals, so highly is he regarded by the Kangaroos.Edwards is most likely to play alongside Smith as effectively two full-forwards, while Wundke hovers across half-forward and McMahon stretches his role in the midfield.Tarrant is still finding his feet and is most likely to work through the interchange. What the return of Smith does do for the Roosters is provide ruckman Orren Stephenson with important back up.Stephenson will not need to push too far forward, and centre half-back Michael Searl will be able to concentrate on his defensive role in a settled backline also comprising Shaune Moloney, Marc Greig, Matt Sharkey, Brett Goodes and Dan Feery.Defeating the bottom-placed Tasmania is a must-win for the Roosters.North Ballarat was all at sea in the wet against the Northern Bullants a week ago and paid the price.Knowing the importance of this encounter, the Roosters should be stung back into top form.MEANWHILE, the future of the Devils remains uncertain owing to the expected formation of a statewide competition in Tasmania.Speculation that Tasmania will withdraw from the VFL remains just that - speculation.AFL Victoria met with AFL Tasmania yesterday.VFL chief executive officer Peter Schwab denied the meeting had been organised specifically to discuss the Devils' future.*The under-18 TAC Cup match between North Ballarat Rebels and Geelong Falcons is no longer a curtain-raiser to the Geelong match at Skilled Stadium tomorrow. It will played at the St Mary's ground in Kardinia Park at 9.40am.
