Detective Senior Constable Mark Sontag from Victoria Police described the unprovoked bashing as 'appalling'.
The victim was left unconscious after three men followed him off a train and set upon him in a tunnel underpass.
In the disturbingly graphic footage released by police on Wednesday, the three assailants can be seen taking turns kicking the man in the head until he lies motionless.
The trio - described by police as being of African origin and aged between 20 and 25 - escaped with the victim's wallet and mobile phone.
The man sustained head injuries and was so concussed after the attack he was unable to report it.
