Police today did a final search of the small park where she is believed to have been hit on the head early yesterday.
The 34-year-old sergeant had been walking uphill along Craigend Street, in plain clothes, the 800 metres or so from her parked car in McLachlan Avenue to work at Kings Cross police station.
She was attacked in darkness between 5.30am and 6.40am about 300 metres from her car.
She was found, conscious but bleeding heavily, in a bus shelter next to the park on Craigend Street.
Doctors at St Vincent's Hospital operated on her yesterday but she remains in a critical condition, the hospital said.
Neither police nor the hospital would confirm reports she might never fully recover from her injuries.
Police are saying very little about their investigation.
A dozen officers from the public order and riot squad assembled today to do a final search of the area. Yellow paint has been used to mark out areas of interest in the park.
Police would not confirm reports a similar search yesterday uncovered a bloodied blue shirt similar to a police uniform.
Sunrise was about 6.38am yesterday. One man whose house backs onto the park said he heard nothing at that time.
