Fire crews were called to the blaze about 11.20pm, where they found the lounge room of the Willow Grove home fully engulfed.
They contained the fire to the lounge room, which suffered a large amount of damage.
Other rooms within the house also suffered smoke and heat damage.
The firefighters also managed to save two young puppies from the blaze.
Ballarat City Fire Brigade senior station officer Anthony Pearce estimated the damage at about $50,000, but said there were a lot of sentimental items in the home that were difficult to put a dollar amount on.
Two crews from Wendouree and one crew for Ballarat City Fire Brigade attended the blaze.
Arson investigators and crime scene detectives were on scene on Saturday to determine what started the fire.
