Yesterday a Victoria Police spokesperson said the man was driving a Toyota tray utility north along the Greendale-Blackwood Road when the car veered off the road around 10.20pm.
Investigators believe the driver failed to complete a right-hand bend in the road before hitting a tree and rolling the vehicle down an embankment, trapping the driver and a 69-year-old man who was a passenger in the car.
The driver died at the scene and the passenger was transported by road to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with serious injuries.
An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said the passenger suffered head, shoulder and collarbone injuries and was in a stable condition yesterday.
Victoria Police investigators formally identified the driver and notified his next of kin yesterday.
A report on the death will be prepared for the Victorian coroner in coming days, with police reminding drivers to use caution when driving on country roads at night and to avoid driving when fatigued.
Ambulance Victoria crews also attended an accident at the Redline Speedway in Yankee Flat Road, Buninyong, shortly before 10.15pm on Saturday.
A car driven by a 42-year-old man collided with another vehicle while driving on the venue’s track but the driver walked to nearby first aid officers.
He was transported to the Ballarat Base Hospital with suspected back or spine injuries.
