Ross Streeter, 30, is still in the Royal Melbourne Hospital for treatment to non-life threatening, self-inflicted injuries and has not yet been spoken to by Homicide Squad detectives.
Streeter, the son of Douglas and nephew of John, was arrested in Cambridge Street, Avoca just metres from his father's house just after midday yesterday. It follows the discovery of a wallet at a recycling plant on Piper Lane, East Bendigo on Friday.
Streeter is believed to have helped his father on the Natte Yallock farm on a regular basis.
THE son of Doug Streeter, one of the brothers shot dead near Avoca on Thursday, has been arrested over the pair's murder.
Investigators are appealing for witnesses to Thursday's incident.
SES volunteers assisted police today with a search of a recycling plant in East Bendigo after a wallet was found yesterday.
Detective Sergeant Sol Solomon told the Bendigo Advertiser it was an "extremely lucky break" an employee at the plant had found John Streeter's wallet.
"He found the wallet and was in the process of trying to track the person down when he recognised the address on the driver's license and had heard the news," he said.
The wallet was believed to have been taken from the victim after the murder and dumped in a bin somewhere between the crime scene and the Bendigo area, Detective Solomon said.
On Friday a number of people were questioned, but none were treated as suspects, Detective Solomon said.
He said there were still no clues as to any motive behind the killings.
EARLIER
A community continues to mourn the deaths of two brothers gunned down on Thursday at their family farm north of Avoca.
John and Doug Streeter, both aged in their 60s, were found dead by a relative just after 6pm.
Detectives from the Homicide Squad arrived just before 10pm and worked through the night to determine what had happened to the respected farmers.
Yesterday afternoon a wallet found at a Bendigo recycling plant was being linked to the double murder, while police continued to scour the crime scene at Natte Yallock.
Police have ruled out murder-suicide as a cause for the deaths.
The brothers were described yesterday as “utter gentlemen” and tributes flowed for the two men from all corners of the small, but tight-knit community.
Many spoke of seeing the men just days ago. They are now battling to come to grips with what has happened.
It’s believed a wallet found in Bendigo may hold the latest clue in the baffling double-murder mystery of brothers John and Doug Streeter.
Both men, aged in their 60s, were found dead by Doug’s wife just before 6pm at their family’s farmhouse near Natte Yallock, north east of Avoca on Thursday.
It’s been reported they suffered a number of gun shot wounds.
Police immediately established a crime scene and the Homicide Squad arrived just before 10pm.
Detectives worked into the night and continued their investigation at first light on Friday.
A van carrying video recording equipment arrived late morning, adding to the forensic data collected from the scene.
A crime scene guard at the entrance to Streeter Lane, about 800 metres from the murder scene, was a permanent fixture on Thursday night and Friday.
Later, detectives switched their focus to a secondary crime scene established at a Bendigo recycling plant.
The Bendigo Advertiser understands a wallet was found within the plant that may be linked to the double murder more than 90 kilometres away.
It was not known last night if the wallet belonged to one of the victims, or a third party.
Police did not say if they had arrested a suspect, if anyone was charged or if anyone had been interviewed in relation to the killings.
Murder-suicide was yesterday ruled out as a cause.
Police converged on the Vatmi Recycling plant in Bendigo East just before 3pm.
Workers at the recycling plant said police arrived at the site and cordoned off an area.
They were told a wallet was found which could have been linked to the double homicide.
Workers were sent home and the plant’s trucks were sent away.
Police were on scene well into the evening yesterday.
Detectives did not call a press conference yesterday or issue any fresh calls for witnesses to the crime.
The Streeters’ farm house is the only property on Streeter Lane, which is a no-through road.
The lane ends at the small weatherboard property, which sits just east of the Pyrenees ranges.
A white ute with a blue tray was visible parked outside.
About four kilometres east is the town of Natte Yallock, which consists of little more than a church, primary school, football club and fire station.
In between the town and the property is the cemetery, where at least three generations of the Streeter family already lay.
There will no doubt be two more in the coming weeks.
