What: Blah Blah Blah!
When: July 6 to July 18
Where: Red Brick Gallery
IN A nutshell, Dan Kelly's latest exhibition can't be described in a nutshell.
Entitled Blah Blah Blah! the exhibition takes an atypical look at graffiti, using humour while addressing the genre of street art in a tongue-in-cheek and sarcastic manner.
But according to Kelly himself, it's up to the observer to make of it what he or she will.
"Some people will walk in and think it's another show about graffiti whereas some might read between the lines and other might get the joke," Kelly said.
"As the title suggests, it's about being bored with the norm."
But this isn't just another graffiti show. For Kelly, it's about gaining insight into the practice of street art.
"Street artists have been breaking the law but now they're out selling in galleries all around the world and getting praise," he said.
"The definition of what graffiti is has shifted and street art has become respected. It's about chasing the dollar and making something that was illegal commercial."
Featuring a handful of artworks layered with vibrancy and colour, Blah Blah Blah! showcases Kelly's primary art medium of painting while including elements of collage and object assemblage.
Having studied fine arts at the University of Ballarat, Kelly's work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions across the state.
With his last solo exhibition held three years ago, Kelly said he was excited to finally have another show. And as is usually the case with his work, his personality is radiating through the canvases.
"It's all a bit of fun," he said.
