Entitled The Ballarat National Theatre, the film features past and present BNT members reflecting on the significance and history of the company.
The film’s co-producer Lucinda Horrocks said the documentary aimed to capture the essence of the theatre company while celebrating its importance to the community.
“It’s nice to pause and talk to members past and present about why they have been involved and their journey so far,” Ms Horrocks said.
“The film captures their memories so it stands as a historical document, but we didn’t want it to be a dry record. We wanted it to tell the story of the place we live in because it’s really interesting and something worth celebrating.”
Containing behind-the-scenes shots of the company’s 2013 75th anniversary season, Ms Horrocks said producers spent several months filming rehearsals, set construction and opening nights.
The filmmakers also sifted through newspaper articles and photographs and interviewed historians.
“For us, the story is about community and the amazing things people can achieve when they’re working on something they love,” she said.
“The only reason the company has been going for 75 years is because of the very passionate people behind it.”
