Carter backmarker for Ballarat Gift

VICTORIAN sprinter Matt Carter has been handed the backmark for this weekend's Ballarat Gift, 120m.

Carter, who took out last month's Rye Gift, will start from 1m as he attempts to win the feature event in its return to Eastern Oval.

Ballarat sprinter Joel Bee must haul in the field from 1.25m to win his hometown gift, while reigning Stawell Gift champion Andrew Robinson is off 2.75m.

Past Stawell Gift winners Matt Wiltshire (3.75m) and Sam Jamieson (4.5m) are amongst the top 10 backmarkers.

Commonwealth Games hopeful Christine Wearne is the backmarker for the rich Ballarat Women's Gift, 120m.

Wearne will run off 0.25m and start more than a metre behind Maddie Coates (1.5m) and Ballarat's Tara Domaschenz (2m).

This year has seen the race double in prizemoney to be worth $5000.

The Ballarat Gift meeting is held on Saturday and Sunday.
