The 19-year-old told a highway patrol officer in Melbourne he had been getting take-away with his friends when he was pulled over about 9.40pm on Thursday.

But the problem had been the car, spotted on the Old Calder Highway in Keilor, was clocked travelling 120km/h in a 60km/h zone, a police spokeswoman said.

A secondary problem for the teenage driver: he was driving his father's car, a 2003 BMW 5 series sedan.

The spokeswoman said said the boy returned home "with nothing but a melted sundae" after police impounded the car under Victoria's anti-hoon laws.

He can get the car back in a month and faces being charged on summons for speeding.
