Fairfax radio had received reports the man was assaulted at BlueScope Steel’s Western Port facility.
But on Tuesday afternoon, police said the injured man had turned up at his friends’ home, about four kilometres away in Albert Street, and said he had been assaulted during the night.
The man was flown to The Alfred Hospital and remains in a critical condition.
Police are appealing for anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
