Homicide police investigating the mysterious murder at Doveton, near Dandenong, have confirmed the woman was a 34-year-old resident of Doveton.

She has been named as Rani Featherstone.

The woman's bloodied body was found slumped on a nature strip in Lace Street by factory workers shortly after 7am on Wednesday morning.

Separate blood stains, about 10 metres apart, and significant upper-body and head wounds led police to believe there was a desperate struggle during a "very violent" attack.

Cuts on her body appeared to have been inflicted by an "edged weapon".

Investigators said no ID cards or mobile phone were found on the body, which caused difficulty in establishing her identity.

The woman, who had long, dark hair, was first believed to have been either a teenager or in her late-20s.

She was found wearing a dark-coloured shorts and a dark long-sleeved shirt. She had also been wearing a pair of white slip-on shoes, which were later recovered within the murder scene.

Detectives have interviewed business owners and workers on the street, and have examined CCTV footage in an effort to piece together the woman's final moments.

A day-long search of a nearby creek and parkland has failed to find the murder weapon.
