Three Ballarat athletes make the Commonwealth Games team

COLLIS Birmingham, Kathryn Mitchell and former Ballarat athlete Victoria Mitchell are officially confirmed on the Athletics Australia team bound for Glasgow.

Hurdles star Sally Pearson will captain the Australian Flames squad with world championships javelin silver medallist Kim Mickle as her vice-captain.

The initial Australian athletics nominations for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow were announced yesterday.

Kathryn Mitchell has formed an exciting duel with Mickle in the javelin all summer.

In a rare move, Athletics Australia will take three javelin throwers to Glasgow, with Canberra’s Kelsey-Lee Roberts to make her Games debut in the event alongside Mitchell and Mickle.

Birmingham is set for his second Commonwealth Games, named to contest the men’s 10,000 metres.

Victoria Mitchell is set for her first major international meet since the 2008 Olympic Games.

Mitchell qualified for the women’s 3000m steeplechase by claiming a national title in a B-qualifying time in Melbourne last weekend.

Athletics Australia has announced 45 selections for the July-August Games in Glasgow.

That number is expected to at least double in the coming months before the qualification period closes on June 1.

Ballarat marathon great Steve Moneghetti, now the chef de mission for the Australian Commonwealth Games team, said it would be the largest athletics team from this country to compete overseas.
