JANE Barclay may not have a background in performing arts, but it didn't stop her from putting her acting shoes on for a good cause.
The Ballarat woman has joined forces with local Sophia Livitsanis to stage the award-winning play The Vagina Monologues in a bid to raise awareness about domestic violence.
"Both Sophia and myself thought the play provided a powerful voice for women and is about something that still needs to be heard or spoken about," Barclay said.
"I saw it a number of years ago in Creswick and I loved it. Most of the women didn't have a theatrical background but were so bold and brave to do it so it was very moving."
The Vagina Monologues dives into the mystery, humor, pain, power, wisdom, outrage and excitement buried in women's experiences.
The play will be presented as part of V-Day, a global activist movement to end violence against women and girls that
raises funds and awareness through artistic works including The Vagina Monologues.
Ms Barclay said the cast of 10 women came from a range of backgrounds, some with prior theatre experience and others with none.
She said funds raised during the play's staging would be passed on to WRISC Family Violence Support.
"I hope it prompts people to have discussion, I hope it prompts women to talk more to one another, and for partners to talk more," she said.
"Hopefully if we raise enough funds to pass on to WRISC, we will also be supporting their work and have some sort of impact on the amount of violence being experienced."
