WHEN Dune Rats went to record their self-titled debut album, they locked themselves up for one month and focused on nothing else.
“We went down south of New South Wales and there was a little shed out in the backyard where we set up and locked ourselves away for about four weeks,” the trio’s drummer BC said.
“It all happened pretty quickly. We just went away in the spare time we had and it all came together naturally.”
Recorded by friend Woody Anderson, tour manager and sound engineer for Children Collide, the album recently debuted at number two on the iTunes alternative chart and peaked at number six on iTunes overall.
Funny Guy, the first single from the record, is an anthem calling out to all those who feel the need to look like something they are not.
Having previously released three EPs that sounded relatively similar, Dune Rats wanted to make sure their album didn’t lock themselves in any particular genre.
“We didn’t want to say we were any specific genre or pigeon hole ourselves in any direction. We just wrote songs that came naturally,” BC said.
“We never talked about what we wanted out of the album. We jammed and the songs that came out were the ones we used for the record.”
Having recently returned from a venture in South Africa, Europe and the UK and Asia, Dune Rats is now on a national tour, visiting capital cities across the country as well as Ballarat.
“It’s going to be hectic but we’re looking forward to it,” BC said.
