You get the feeling Ross Lyon is pretty happy with where Fremantle sits after 14 rounds of AFL fixtures.

The Dockers moved into the top four after their 83-point win over Brisbane at Patersons Stadium on Saturday night and it’s hard to see them falling any lower.

Their draw is pretty favourable too, especially over the next five weeks when they play teams currently outside of the top eight.

They are now heaping the pressure on to Port Adelaide, Sydney and Hawthorn, who sit above them.

The round 23 clash between the Dockers and Power at Patersons Stadium could have a lot riding on the outcome.

The victory over the Lions bought about a couple of warnings from Lyon – a coach known to be consistently conservative when talking to the media.

He warned the rest of the competition that they don’t mind playing in wet weather and that key personnel were close to returning to his already impressive side.

Lyon wasn’t afraid to let the competition know that the Dockers fifth consecutive victory was enjoyed in difficult wet and windy conditions.

“It was a difficult night by Perth standards - not by Melbourne standards - in terms of weather and all those things,” he said.

“Credit to our guys, they come out really focused, bar a 10 or 12-minute patch.

“We delivered a really focused effort and worked on some things that we have been trying to. We were disciplined in the way we went about it so we take the four points and go home without injury.

“I know we are a good wet weather team. We train in the wet during the week. The players are bouncing around and last year in September we played on a wet day, so it doesn’t phase us.

‘We like it dry, but we’re not a big tall team so there’s nothing wrong with living on the ground for us.”

Usually, questions about venues and conditions bring about a measured response of “we like to think we’re an anywhere, anytime football club,” from whichever member of the Dockers club is talking at the time.

The win against the Lions was managed without key defenders Michael Johnson and Luke McPharlin – however, the ball only went into the Lions forward line 17 times, so they weren’t missed that much.

Both are listed for returns in round 18, which will give them a six-game run to the finals.

But it’s small forward Michael Walters that Lyon appears most excited to see back in action.

Walters hasn’t played since he required ankle surgery in round three and there has been speculation that he wouldn’t be seen back on an AFL arena until 2015.

But that appears to not be the case.

“Son Son [Walters] is on his way back. He's coming,” Lyon said enthusiastically.

“He'll be back in the not too distant future. He's back running.”

Imagine him added to a forward line that has seen Hayden Ballantyne kick 11 goals in the past two weeks and Matthew Pavlich boot 14 majors in the past five outings.

Plus one of their high profile recruits during the last pre-season, Scott Gumbleton is again on the comeback trail from injury.

The former Essendon key forward would potentially provide terrific assistance for Pavlich by adding a second tall marking option deep in attack, but injured his hamstring during the pre-season.

He has played the past three games in the WAFL and kicked four goals while having his game time managed.

As positive as Lyon was on Saturday night though, he fell short of identifying the Dockers arrival in the top four as significant, pointing out that there are still nine rounds to go before finals.

“But if it finished now it would be fantastic, it would be really significant. But I don’t think it does. I think there’s nine to go and I don’t think we have enough wins (yet) to secure ourselves in the final eight,” he said.

“So there is plenty to go here – a really big challenge.

“We like sitting there. You would rather be there than not be there. But as this point in the year anything can happen and there’s lots of water to flow under the bridge here.

“We are on a long arduous climb but it was a good climb today.”
