With a top temperature of 15 on Monday, a cold 13 degrees forecast for Tuesday and the rest of the week’s temperatures hovering in the low teens, last month’s record balmy weather is but a distant memory.

From Monday, woollen scarves, coats and wind-resistant umbrellas will be mandatory if Melburnians wish to avoid the worst of the bone-chilling winds.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning across the state, warning Victorians to prepare for a strong cold front, gale-force winds, showers and even blizzards in alpine areas.

Bureau senior forecaster Dean Stewart said showers and winds will  worsen as Monday progresses, with hail and storms expected to hit the city later this afternoon.

“We’re likely to see showers increasing as we go into the afternoon, and there is a risk of some hail and thunder,” he said.

Winds reached 90km/h overnight, with those living around Melbourne Airport, Port Phillip Bay and the Dandenong ranges copping the worst of the gusts.

But the strongest winds are forecast for Tuesday, with gusts expected to reach up to 100km/h in the Melbourne area, Mr Stewart said.

“As the low pressure system crosses Bass Strait to the south of Melbourne, there’s a good chance we’ll see extremely strong winds in the city, and even stronger in bayside areas such as the Mornington Peninsula.”

Tuesday morning will also see a reversal of Monday’s weather patterns, with strong winds, showers and storms expected to start early in the morning and ease later in the afternoon.

A State Emergency Services spokeswoman said the SES received 15 calls overnight, with fallen trees the most common concern.

She said crews were on standby for the next few days while severe weather warnings remained in place.
