Nobody was injured in the incident.
The Ajax Street building was severely damaged when the crane truck fell onto its side, collapsing part of the roof and knocking out a section of wall.
The house was earmarked for demolition, according to workers.
Ballarat Clarendon College confirmed the former residential property was part of the school, but did not comment on the incident.
