Sergeant Stuart Gale, of Ballarat Highway Patrol, said a Redan woman, 45, was driving a Nissan Micra hatchback along Clarkson Street when she failed to stop at a give way sign on the corner of Rubicon Street, just before 4pm.
He said a Toyota Camry driving on Rubicon Street, towards the Midland Highway, plunged into the side of the other car, causing the Nissan to spin out of control and roll into a ditch on the corner of Talbot Street South.
The other driver, a Delacombe woman, 52, had a seven-year-old girl with her in the front passenger seat.
Four police crews, two CFA crews, an ambulance and fire crew attended the scene.
Sergeant Gale said the occupants of both cars were lucky to escape unharmed.
He said by the time police arrived, the driver of the Kia had already climbed out of the flipped car unaided.
“The people in both cars are extremely lucky to walk away uninjured and it is just the case of a driver not paying attention for a single moment,” Sergeant Stuart Gale said.
“We believe that the driver of the Nissan has failed to give way and driven out on to Rubicon Street without looking, causing the other car to crash into the side of the vehicle.
“The impact of the other vehicle hitting the Nissan has caused it to flip and roll.”
Rubicon Street resident Eileen Keating said she heard a piercing bang before she went outside to see what had happened.
“It was the loudest bang I’d ever heard,” Ms Keating said.
“I can’t count the number of times there has been near misses at that intersection.
“ When I’m going down the shops I won’t back out my driveway until I know there are no cars driving either way.”
Ms Keating said the speed limited needed to be reduced to 40 kilometres in the area.
