A strong high pressure system over the past two days has seen temperatures drop below freezing, resulting in fog, frost and ice across roads in the Ballarat region.

At -3.3 degrees, this was Ballarat's coldest temperature for the year and one of the coldest on record for the past decade.

But this morning's temperature paled in comparison to 2002, when the mercury dropped to -5 on July 25.

If you lived in Ballarat in 1982 then you might remember the temperature dropping to -6 degrees on July 21, making it Ballarat's coldest recorded temperature to date.

But the worst should be behind us with good news for the coming week as temperatures set to warm up from tomorrow.

Although temperatures will still remain in the single figures, morning temperatures will sit between 3 and 5 degrees with patchy fog clearing.

Showers are expected over the next week with the temperature set to reach between 8 and 14 degrees on Thursday and Friday.

We are expected to reach a maximum of 9 degrees later on Wednesday.
