Paul Messara has left the door slightly ajar to return to training in the future despite winding down his stable and agreeing to manage his father John's Hunter Valley breeding operation.

Messara, who prepared Ortensia and Alverta to group 1 success since taking up training eight years ago, has been appointed Arrowfield's stud manager for the next breeding season. The appointment came on short notice after longtime Arrowfield employee Sam Fairgray joined Inglis.

But Messara said he would be open to taking up the binoculars again if the opportunity arose in the future as he scales back to just six horses in the short term before closing the stable.

"You never say never and you don't know what's around the corner," Messara said. "Things can always change.

"I've got a great passion for training ... I love it and I really enjoy it. It's a challenge and one of the hardest occupations. The highs are fantastic and I'd never rule it out, but my intention would be really focused on getting Arrowfield running as smoothly as possible [first]."

Messara will continue with the preparations of a select number of horses, including promising three-year-olds Scissor Kick and Panzer Division.

The rest of Arrowfield's part-owned horses will be shipped to other Sydney trainers, most notably the Team Hawkes partnership and Gerald Ryan.
