The McDonalds Reds conceded two goals in six minutes in the opening stanza to set up a 3-1 defeat at JL Murphy Reserve on Wednesday night.
An own goal from Shaun Romein and a tap-in from Lambros Honos at the 16 and 24-minute marks handed the Sharks a near unassailable lead in ferociously windy conditions.
Deng Aguek kept the visitors in touch with a brilliant left-footed strike just moments before the Honos goal, but Port Melbourne was able to enter the break with a crucial one-goal advantage.
Ballarat squandered a host of opportunities in the second-half and eventually tired well before the final whistle as the Shark’s controlled the final 25 minutes of the match.
