Commonwealth Games: Matt Flapper, Brett Wilkie bowl their way to bronze

BALLARAT lawn bowling exports Matt Flapper (skip) and Brett Wilkie (second) secured bronze medals in the men's four at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Flapper combined with Wilkie, Nathan Rice (third) and Wayne Ruediger (lead) to defeat India 15-14 on Friday night (AEST).

Gold went to Scotland, which defeated England 16-8.

The Australians had to do it the hard way though, coming from well back.

They trailed India 4-0, 10-5 and then 14-9 after 11 ends before staging a remarkable comeback with everything on the line.

The Jackaroos chipped away at the deficit to trail 14-13 with one end to play before getting the victory.

Flapper and Wilkie started out in the sport in Ballarat -  Flapper with Creswick and Central Wendouree as well as being a topline indoor bias bowler, while Wilkie spent his formative years in the sport at Webbcona.

Flapper is now head coach at Ocean Grove, which plays in the Ballarat-Geelong premier division pennant in the summer.

Wilkie has developed into one of the best bowlers in world since moving to Queensland, living on the Gold Coast.

Flapper also represented Australia in triples in Glasgow, losing the bronze medal play-off.

Wilkie reached the quarter finals in the pairs.
