Workers digging on a nature strip on the corner of Victory Avenue and Cuthberts Rd either drilled into the pipe itself or pushed a rock into it, according to police.
The incident happened about 1pm, and Cuthberts Rd was only re-opened after 3.30 pm, with work on pipes continuing on Tuesday.
Police came across the leak after attending a call 500 metres down the road, which the CFA decided was a false alarm after testing the air for gas.
Three fire crews attended the scene, and only declared the area safe after workers put in a bypass mechanism that skipped the main.
Ausnet workers will return on Tuesday to repair the damaged gas main section, according to a spokesman.
A resident, who did not want to named, said it was the latest in a string of incidents for the street.
"We can't catch a trick here. We had the power out last week and roadworks for six months," he said.
