Coach Ewen McKenzie said No.8 Kieran Read's "back to basics" comments foreshadowed a renewed physicality from the New Zealand Test side, who were thwarted from a record-breaking 18 Test wins in a row in Sydney by a dogged but unpolished Australia.

"Kieran Read's already talked about 'back to basics' and I think I said that the other day: you have to get the fundamentals right," McKenzie said.

"From the first minute of the game they'll come hard through the forwards. They'll be taking you on at set piece but in terms of pick and drive too, trying to impose themselves and get on the front foot.

"There's going to be another level of physicality up front and we have to be ready for that.

"If it is a dry track, the weather is less in play so it does get down to physical pressure and tactical pressure and how you deal with it."

McKenzie did not make any changes to the squad of 23 players who settled for a 12-12 draw at ANZ Stadium, keeping Kurtley Beale at five-eighth and Nic White at halfback, despite a couple of charged-down box kicks and a few uncharacteristic wobbles at set piece.

The Wallabies will try to break a 28-year losing streak to the All Blacks at Eden Park, and McKenzie conceded they were under considerable pressure to do so.

"I think we have the right group of guys and I think they'll be better for the experience, that's why we didn't change anything," he said.

"Clearly there's pressure, we now have two games and we have to win two. That's a pretty difficult equation and we back the guys to do the business but they understand, too, that they have to deliver."

Cohesion was named as their downfall on Saturday, when Australia recovered from a scrappy first half to put themselves in a position to win the match but did not.

Beale's combination with White and inside centre Matt Toomua looked underdone at times, which was unsurprising considering their lack of game time as a trio. Hooker Nathan Charles also displayed the trademark signs of first-start jitters in an otherwise commendable debut.

"You have to look at the game and think about what worked, what didn't," McKenzie said.

"Was it an issue of personnel, was it an issue in terms of composure, or an issue with the weather, or cohesion?

"We didn't start that well and we had chances to win at the end where we didn't. We'll back the same group of guys to do it. How we use the guys in the game will be different."
