The field to contest for preselection in the plum state Liberal seat of Hawthorn has been finalised, with four people putting their hand up for the position that will be decided by the party's administrative committee on Thursday evening.

Institute of Public Affairs executive director John Roskam and Premier Denis Napthine's legal counsel, John Pesutto, are the front-runners. Magazine journalist Sue Smethurst and Liberal backbencher Graham Watt's electoral officer, Ralph Krein, have also nominated.
The seat was vacated after former Premier Ted Baillieu made the surprising decision to not recontest the seat at the November 29 election.

Community Services Minister Mary Wooldridge was linked the seat - her seat of Doncaster was abolished, and she failed in a bid for Kew and is now running for the Upper House - but has not nominated.
