A follow up story to his first two books Lake Brambruck and Golton Island, his new novel Corker's Creek will be released next month.
The Wimmera based novel follows the story of Dr Rory Clark and his partner Danny Adkin who become entangled in the lives of the residents at Corker's Creek.
Mr Gellatly said he always imagined that one day he would write a novel and after 70 years he made the decision to go ahead and follow his dream.
It's in his novels that Gellatly reflects on his memories of Wimmera and the region, which he says brings reality to his stories.
"I was brought up on a farm in the Lubeck district, about half an hour east of Horsham and near Murtoa. I love the flat landscape; I love the vegetation; I am endeared to the Wimmera River, and I love the community spirit of the people of the Wimmera," he said.
"From the farm I grew up on, the outline of the Grampians was on the southern horizon every day, and I have spent many, many hours, days, within the boundaries of the Grampians National Park, always mindful of its importance to our Aboriginal brothers and sisters."
It was through these experiences that Gellatly created his characters and story lines and has cemented Gellatly as one of the region best known gay fiction writers.
"I try to get my characters involved not just with each other, but in the country communities they live in," he said.
"Where did the real inspiration come from? This might seem like a dumb answer, but it was just there in my head, and I wanted to express it."
The landscapes and environment of Wimmera not only inspired his story line but also his decision to publish his novels as ebooks.
"I publish my books as ebooks only as I have trouble with the consumption of trees to produce 'hard copy' books when technology is now available to not need to do that," he said.
"I am also pleased that, with modern technology, I am able to produce an entire book, cover picture and all, by myself ... and then have it distributed to the entire world via the internet at the press of a button."
