Friends of Canadian Corridor convener Jeff Rootes said a large number of residents already took advantage of the forest and he expected more would do so if the funding came through.
“This is a wonderful announcement,” he said.
“It means that our eastern skyline is protected forever. It is a great day.
“The forest is right on the edge of this part of Ballarat and people love living in this area because they can walk into the forest. It is fabulous living.”
The group is hoping the government will match Labor’s offer, especially considering the number of people who use the area.
“You can just be standing in one part of the forest and someone will walk past you sooner or later,” Mr Rootes said.
“In the future, that will increase because a better forest will mean a better recreational opportunity.”
Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews said the funding would mean the forest would be declared a state park and gain new signage, walking and bike paths and picnic areas.
“This is great news for families. It will protect this green skyline of Ballarat forever,” he said.
