The Australian Working Dog Rescue Incorporated foster carer has a trio of tiny kelpie puppies who will come up for adoption within the next fortnight.
The three kelpie pups were part of a litter of 11. Sadly, the mother didn’t take to any of the them.
The mother’s owner, who lives in Bega in New South Wales, took on two, a few didn’t survive, and AWDRI took on the rest.
These three – Opal, Pearl and Shelby – found their way to Miners Rest where each of them is now looking for a new home.
“I think they are likely to be adopted out as pets because both parents were pets rather than actual working dogs,” Ms Avery says.
“They are six weeks old and they will go up on AWDRI’s website in a couple of weeks because we don’t adopt them out until they are eight weeks old.
“They each have their own little personality. I think they’ll all make great pets.
“Opal is a real little sweetheart and loves to be close to you all the time. Pearl has loads of personality, she has the biggest head – I mean that in both ways.
“Shelby is a little fire cracker. She is quite feisty.”
AWDRI does not sell rescued dogs but there is a $375 fee (adult dogs are $325) which ensures each puppy is wormed, vaccinated and microchipped.
When it is time for de-sexing the pups, that is also covered in the fee.
In the meantime there are three little mouths to feed. Not that Ms Avery minds, because this is what she signed up for as a foster carer.
“I’ve been a foster carer for about a year and these are the 13th, 14th and 15th dogs I’ve had,” she said. “It is hard to give them away but you know they are going to a good home and you also know there is a steady stream of them.”
