BCUA coach adviser John O’Brien said youngsters could umpire under-14 and under-16 matches on Saturday mornings, which would not interfere with their ability to play in senior grades later in the day.
“We encourage them to come along and umpire because they can still keep playing in the afternoon,” O’Brien said.
“Like all 17-year-olds, they need money and need part-time jobs.
“It’s a win-win situation for everyone.”
O’Brien said the association was looking to add to its membership and encouraged any women interested in the sport to join.
The BCUA has been holding regular information training sessions at its base at the Russell Square Community Sports Centre throughout the pre-season, where members have brushed up on rules and honed their skills before the start of the 2014-15 campaign this Saturday.
More information on joining the BCUA can be sought from secretary Mark Harris on 0417 594 710 or by visiting the association’s website at bcua.vic.cricket.com.au.
