The pair has been named AFL Goldfields’ coaches of the year – Gill as the region’s best senior leader and Leoncini for his work with the Towners’ under-17s and Central Highlands junior interleague team.
“As a junior coach, I always try to improve kids’ games and to get recognition for hard work is humbling
and an honour,” Leoncini said.
“It means what we’re doing, we’re doing right, which is nice to know.”
AFL Victoria Goldfields development managers Tim Shearer and Brett Anderson took into consideration on-field success but prioritised the award candidates’ approach to coaching and passion to get the most out of their players.
Gill and Leoncini are each studying their level two coaching accreditation, a 12-month program, and said they were fortunate to be surrounded by good coaching mentors and club people to bounce ideas off.
As regional winners, the pair will be invited to the Australian Football Coaches Association coach of the year dinner in the members’ dining room at the MCG on November 14.
