A SENIOR women’s football league in Ballarat is a step closer to reality after Bacchus Marsh Football Club registered its first female open age women’s side.
The Cobras have formed a side and will compete in the Victorian Women’s Football League as of 2015.
Ballarat Football League operations manager Aaron Nunn said the founding of a new club showed a fully-fledged Women’s Ballarat Football League was closer to fruition.
Currently, Redan, Golden Point, Sunbury and Melton compete in the VWFL.
Nunn said it was hoped a WBFL competition could be established within the next two or three years, with a minimum of six clubs preferred.
A youth girls competition has been run by the BFL since 2011, with female involvement in the league experiencing an unprecedented boost.
It is not yet known what division Bacchus Marsh will be competing in the VWFL, although it is likely to be in division 3/4 or division 5.
