The nation's largest travel agency has also refuted suggestions a weaker Aussie dollar has led to slower growth in the number of Australians travelling abroad for holidays in recent months.

Despite growing concerns about Ebola, the company was doubtful the outbreak of the disease in parts of west Africa has had a "meaningful impact" on travel, partly because the areas where it has spread are not major tourist destinations.

Flight Centre said it was on track to achieve its forecast for an underlying profit before tax of between $395 million and $405 million this financial year, a 5 to 8 per cent rise on 2013-14.

Speaking at its annual meeting in Brisbane, Flight Centre managing director Graham Turner cautioned that reaching the targets for this financial year would not be a formality because first-half growth was likely to be flat.

"In Australia, we expect a gradual recovery in demand and consumer confidence as the financial year progresses, which will hopefully lead to accelerated second-half growth," he told shareholders on Thursday.

"Of course, we cannot guarantee this recovery will eventuate and, while sales are growing modestly in both leisure and corporate travel, we are yet to see significant improvement."

Shares in Flight Centre dipped almost 2 per cent on Thursday morning to $42.67. The stock is down almost 23 per cent since reaching an all-time high in March of $55.57.

While it was experiencing some volatility in Australia, Mr Turner said the travel company's international businesses were "generally performing well".

His comments echo those from Virgin Australia chief executive John Borghetti, who said on Wednesday that the leisure travel sector in Australia remained flat.

However, Mr Borghetti is optimistic that demand for leisure travel will pick up early next year.

Mr Turner also refuted suggestions that a weaker dollar was responsible for slower growth in Australians heading overseas for holidays.

"Given that leisure travel demand in Australia slowed in-store in May after the budget, and we have not yet seen a full recovery, it was inevitable that this would translate to slower growth in Australian outbound travel in the ensuing months," he said.

"We believe that currency in itself is not a critical driver of Australian outbound travel."

He emphasised that outbound travel has increased in years when the Australian dollar traded at 48 US cents, while it also increased when it was worth $US1.10.

Mr Turner said Flight Centre had not seen any major shift in travel patterns, such as more people taking domestic holidays this year.

Instead, consumers tended to opt for lower-priced holidays, travel for shorter periods of time or paid for their holidays in advance in Australian dollars if they were concerned about currency movements.

Mr Turner said travellers were benefiting from a "golden era" of travel due to cheap fares, a greater range of travel choice, less flying time to destinations and greater comfort in the air.

The cost of a return flight on the so-called "kangaroo route" between Australia and London had hardly changed in three decades, despite a significant increase in inflation and average wages.

"Generally, the price customers are paying for return flights to Europe this year is down slightly on the same period last year," he said.
