Having ignominiously failed to win a match at the MCG last season the Bushrangers began this season with a commanding nine-wicket win over the Blues, completing a first-round Sheffield Shield trifecta of all home teams scoring outright wins.

A relentless bouncer barrage from Chris Tremain (3-63) and the unerringly accurate leg-spin of Fawad Ahmed (3-49) were pivotal in allowing Victoria to dismiss the visitors for 271 five overs into the last session, leaving it a target of 131 from 33 overs.

The required run-rate of four an over was rendered irrelevant by the batting of Marcus Stoinis, who surged to his half-century from just 37 deliveries and finished 84 not out from  63 balls. The 25-year-old demonstrated his ability to meld brutal striking with most textbook technique. This included blasting emerging paceman Gurinder Sandhu back over his head for six.

While Stoinis and Rob Quiney (45 not out) batted nervelessly in the last session, reaching the target with 11.4 overs to spare, captain Wade was eager to ensure his bowlers were acknowledged for their ability to "create something out of nothing" and bowl out NSW for a second time on a pitch that remained ideal for batting.

The final-day scalps of Scott Henry (52) and Kurtis Patterson (22) made the Blues' survival bid reliant on their two most senior batsmen: Ben Rohrer and captain Peter Nevill. Rohrer had to retire when the seventh delivery he faced, from Tremain, brutally struck the base of his helmet, behind his ear. The veteran  collapsed and was taken from the ground on a motorised stretcher.

"It looked pretty nasty. It got him flush, had a very good connection. I knew straight away he was struggling," said Nevill, who was at the other end and finished unbeaten on 45.

"Thankfully he's just got back from the hospital and there's no major damage. He'll probably have a sore head tomorrow but hopefully there's nothing to stop him playing the next shield game."

Nevill said the Bushrangers' comfortable victory was a reflection that, in their second innings, they were "chasing too small a score in too many overs".

Under the newscoring system Victoria finished  with 8.85 points, with NSW claiming 1.26.

Former NSW paceman Tremain did not get a wicket until his ninth spell and 33rd over for his new state, although after lunch he was on a hat-trick. Wade praised the 23-year-old's hostile bowling. "He bowled with good pace; that's what we recruited him for," he said.

"We've obviously got [Jake] Reed and Tremain now, guys that both have  good pace to really mix in with what our other guys do.

"Last year we probably lacked the out-and-out quick. It makes the other guys bowl so much better as well."
