As their campaign kicked off last winter, Liberal candidates Craig Coltman and Ben Taylor installed large-scale campaign signs in the shopfront windows at the corner of Humffray Street and Mair Street without seeking approval and without consulting local heritage guidelines that govern the signage and advertising of their neighbouring businesses.

In its usual lightning-fast manner (not) council finally heeded community criticism of this inappropriate placement of campaign advertising and, in October, ruled that the shopfront display was in contravention of council's rules regarding street signage and advertising.
No one realistically expected the Liberal signage to disappear in the closing weeks of the campaign, and sure enough, it dominates that intersection to this day.
Now that the campaign is finished, however, it's time that council enforce the ruling that Mr Coltman and Mr Taylor remove their illegal and inappropriate advertising hoardings.
Either that, or levy a daily fine for disregarding a council directive much as would be experienced by anyone else ignoring a council notice to eradicate illegal graffiti on their property or bill posters deemed inappropriate to a site.
