From the moment he left the stage as a finalist in the 2011 TV show Australia’s Got Talent, he has hit the ground running .
A whirlwind of live gigs and three albums later, Chooka has a resume many in the industry would envy. Living without TV, internet or music was potentially the best thing that could have happened to Chooka, who used his natural surroundings to become one of Australia’s most recognised improvised inspired musicians.
It was Chooka’s made-up-on-the-spot performance on stage at Australia’s Got Talent that had the audience and judges mesmerised , and now the rural Victorian star is set to play for Ballarat audiences with the sounds that made him so renown.
“Improvisation is like a blank canvas, there are endless opportunities, and what excites me most about it is that you can create anything that you like just from the notes you see in front of you,” he said.
“You aren’t bound to any rules, and it’s a world you can create for the audience to feel and get a glimpse of.
“I like the fact that I can bring people into my world and they can understand something about me without sharing any words.”
Chooka returns to Ballarat on Thursday to perform a three-hour set at the newly renovated Suttons House of Music.
“I will be performing a style that I have been working on and perfecting for nearly a year now, which is jazz/ragtime/honky tonk.”
