For budding local photographers, summer’s clear skies meant sunsets soon became the subject of choice.
The Courier’s Facebook page received multiple images of sunsets from readers,
which inspired an idea to put together a gallery driven by readers’ photos.
A invitation on social media saw more than 30 images of sunsets submitted, some highlighting Ballarat’s most iconic landmarks.
Lake Wendouree was the background of choice, with 20 of the 34 images taken at the city’s iconic lake.
Mount Buninyong, Creswick and Ballarat North were also the subject of some of the photos.
Local photographer Michael Jones said Lake Wendouree was the perfect place for him to take photos, with his collection of 140 images of sunrises and sunsets growing almost daily.
“Sunsets bring out the best in the water, and if the water is smooth it reflects beautifully,” he said.
Perfecting his shots comes down to understanding the elements at the time of photographing.
“To get a good photograph, there are a lot of factors you need to know,”
Mr Jones said. “With the lake, you need to be aware of which way the wind is blowing – to get the calm water you need the wind behind you.”
Capturing one of the more unusual sunsets was Beaux Demi Gillett, of Beauxdemi Photography.
“I captured this beautiful sunset of Ballarat that made the sky look like fire,” she said.
With 14 shares and 49 likes on Facebook, it seems everyone loves a good sunset.
