Each school has started training ahead of the school year to prepare students for the rowing season.
Ballarat High School is not only out to defend its title as Head of the Lake victors but to have as much fun during the season as it can.
Its camp started on Saturday and will continue training up until Friday, with its first regatta for the year on the Barwon River on Saturday.
High School rowing director Rob Simmonds said fitness and technique would be the key components of the week.
“We’re trying to get the kids awake again after the Christmas pudding – and get a few miles in the boat and their technique finalised,” Mr Simmonds said. “Even though our boys’ first crew won last year – it’s a complete new crew, new rowers, new cox and new coach.”
Stroke and boat captain Lachlan Simpson said it was fairly busy when trying to get ready for the season along with working well with the crew again.
“We’re starting to get back into it again,” Simpson said.
“It’s good to be here rowing and training. Your crew are your best mates.”
Two seat Kyle Tabbitt has been hooked since he gave rowing a try three years ago.
He hasn’t spent much time training during the summer, but tried to keep his fitness up through cycling.
