Ballarat beat the Geelong Bowls Region 206-184 at Central Wendouree on Australia Day.
The region’s next generation of bowls stars, the Gold Diggers, were also out on show to play against the Geelong Giants.
Unfortunately, the Diggers couldn’t replicate the success of the senior side, losing the battle for the Dave Alsop Shield. Both sides showed many reasons why the future of lawn bowls is going the right way, with the match played with great spirit.
In other news, the 10th annual Junior Provincial Championship was held at the Daylesford Bowling Club on Wednesday, January 21.
Eight of Bowls Victoria’s junior development squads fronted up to the two grass greens and were greeted with light wind and an occasional cloud, with a top temperature of 30 degrees.
Diamond Valley Vipers, Sandbelt Dolphins, Northern Flyers and Geelong Giants made up section one, with section two comprised of the Western Warriors, West Gippsland Lightning, Bendigo Dragons and the Ballarat Gold Diggers.
Teams from both sections played three games of two-bowl triples for 75-minute matches.
Northern Flyers and Bendigo Dragons emerged as the victors from both sectors, with Bendigo eventually claiming a fourth successive title by way of a 26-11 win in the final.
BDBD chairman Ross Jones presented the Flapper Family Shield to Troy Mainsbridge at the end of the day.
A special thanks goes to the Daylesford Bowling Club, and to Stephen Sullivan for his work in arranging the program.
On Sunday, the BDBD’s representative side plays at Bendigo against Bendigo, Geelong and Wimmera for the Provincial Shield.
With Bendigo playing at home, Ballarat will have to bring its A-game to win.
The tournament starts at 9.30am.
