The training ground closed earlier this month amid reports chemical residues were detected in large tanks used to store mains water for firefighter training.

Lieutenant of the Ballan CFA brigade Ian Ireland said there was strong community support developing to save the facility.

“The reason why we need it is that it provides jobs for about 60 local people ... they would be out of a job otherwise,” he said. 

“It also provides economic stimulus for the community.

It generates around $250,000 in the Ballan area during a year.”

Mr Ireland said the facility provided a place for volunteers from all over the state to receive training. 

A Facebook group set up by the community of Ballan has already attracted 1500 likes within 48 hours. 

However, the future of the site is unclear, with the government failing to commit to its reopening. 

“Fiskville remains closed pending the results of testing as the future of the site remains under consideration,” Minister for Emergency Services Jane Garrett said.

Mr Ireland said millions of dollars had already been spent on the facility to bring it up to scratch after previous health scares. 

“Because it is a workplace for so many people, we want it open,” he said. 

“The negativity around the facility has all been developed by the government. 

“If there is a problem, fix it, don’t just walk away.

“They are hell-bent on closing it; the previous government wasn’t.” 

The Ballan Football Club was also using parts of the training facility in the lead-up to the 2015 Central Highlands Football season. 

Club president Billy Smith said the club was disappointed it was forced to move from 

the centre at Fiskville. “We were very disappointed we had to move from Fiskville as it was a fantastic facility with a gym and good training area,” he said.

“It was really good for the community and we are hoping that they have the problem fixed and that it’s going to be reopened as soon as possible.”
