The result was bitter because the Strikers had plenty of chances to win the game and dominated possession, but also sweet because it demonstrated how far Ballarat has come since last season.
The Strikers entered the clash with two changes from last year's starting XI, with the explosive Jordan Ivey offering an attacking presence on the left hand-side of the midfield, while Holly Williamson returned to her post at centre back.
However, it was the positional changes that made a significant difference to the Strikers' style of play.
Hannah Kozaris offered greater stability in the middle of the park after a move from central defence, while Erin Plucke and Jasmine Emselle were used as attacking wide defenders.
The role changes saw the Strikers play with the kind of confidence that was sorely lacking in 2014, and the home side subsequently stifled Monbulk with a high press.
The central midfield duo of Tessa Curtain and Kozaris dominated the centre of the park from the start, which led to a quiet day in goals for Jasmina Zdelar.
However, the Strikers were unable to capitalise on their superior pace in the attacking third, with too many deliveries missing their intended target.
A far more purposeful second-half ensued, with Lulu Al-Huneidi announcing her presence with a greater show of attack and aggression.
Monbulk tired late in the game, but was still able to hold off Ballarat to steal a point.
Earlier in the day the development squad had an impressive 2-1 win, with goals to Molly Esmonde and Cassie Anstis.
Next week the Strikers will hit the road against Keilor Park.
Coaches will have a headache at the selection table, with Lily McLean, Vanessa Yung and Claire Demuth all available for the round two fixture.
