Local traders and residents are becoming frustrated over a lack of progress from the Labor government who promised to open the station on weekends.

Ahead of last year's state election, all parties promised to open the City Loop train station on weekends due to the growing number of residents in that part of the city and to provide better public transport access to the popular Queen Victoria Market.

In September Labor promised to open the station, saying the western part of the CBD was no longer the "dead end" of the city.

"There are something like 8000 apartments being built in this precinct right now. This western end of the city is thriving, it is growing, it is very popular," Daniel Andrews said in September.

The Napthine government also pledged to open the station, promising an April timetable change would incorporate weekend openings.

But that timetable change has being reviewed by the Labor government, delaying the opening of Flagstaff station. The Labor government will not say when Flagstaff might open on weekends.

In June there will be a public transport timetable change when the Regional Rail Link is bought into the network, but this change will not include Flagstaff.

Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said the government would open Flagstaff Station on weekends as part of a broader metropolitan timetable change "later this year."

A week before Labor's September announcement, the Greens tabled a petition in parliament last year calling for weekend openings saying it would improve access and boost local business.

The Greens won the seat of Melbourne, which includes Flagstaff, at the election. New MP Ellen Sandell said residents and traders in the area are becoming increasingly frustrated by the lack of action.

"Why is this government dragging its feet, they've been able to move on many of their other promises, why haven't done this yet?," Ms Sandell said.

Shadow public transport minister David Hodgett said Mr Andrews needed to get on with opening the station.

"This is yet another example of Daniel Andrews saying one thing before the election, and doing the opposite after being elected," Mr Hodgett said.

Local café owner Kirsty Chiaplias​, who runs the Workers' Food Room on Little Lonsdale St has been campaigning for the station to be open on weekends for two years. She says business would benefit from its opening, as would the growing number of new residents in the area.

"We pay rent 24/7, but there's no foot traffic on weekends. We would open on weekends if the station was open," Ms Chiaplias said.

"It is not good for business; it is not good for the area. It is disappointing they said they were going to do something about but they haven't."
