The couple posted a description of a car used in a robbery at their Wilmott Street home and within hours the post had gone viral, with thousands of people either commenting on the post, sharing it or viewing it.

Two people stole an iPad and garage remote from a car at 5am on Saturday, before they were scared off by the Lucas couple. 

A plea by Emma Idnurm on Facebook soon after the theft resulted in a large number of people being on the lookout for the thieves.

"It gives you faith and hope there are decent people out there," she said. 

The description of the green Commodore with a distinctive red door was only the beginning, however. 

"People (started) messaging me saying they had a man come in with (that) car," she said. 

After the Facebook alert, which included a description of the car, Ms Idnurm said workers at several shops had passed on screen-grabs of CCTV footage of the alleged offenders using stolen cards. 

The widespread sharing of Ms Idnurm's description meant people were already on the look-out, and they knew to pass the information on to her. One even showed a man getting out of a green Commodore with a red door. 

While the effort has, so far, not resulted in the return of Ms Idnurm's iPad - with precious ultrascan images and a video of her and her partner announcing her pregnancy -  Victoria Police put out an alert on Tuesday afternoon with the vision provided by one of the shops. 

The alert said the duo could also be linked to several other thefts in the area late last week and over the weekend.  

"Police are investigating whether the same suspects may have committed further thefts and deceptions in the Ballarat area." 

Ms Idnurm said she appreciated the response from people online, and said if anyone saw the green Commodore they should call the police.
