Mount Hotham and Falls Creek were covered with a light sprinkling of snow overnight as temperatures dropped as low as zero.

Falls Creek photographer Chris Hocking said the about 10 centimetres of snow had created a  "winter wonderland".

"It's probably the most significant snow we've seen to date this year," he said.

"We've seen a few kids out and about, and saw a few tourists come into the village having a bit of a snowball fight. It's quite exciting."

Mr Hocking said more snow was expected for the evening in what was a precursor for the next week.

"We've got a very substantial system coming through on Tuesday and that will deliver widespread snow to the alps, which is wonderful news, just three or four weeks away from the snow season," he said.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Richard Carlyon said the worst of the wild weather had passed for Mother's Day as showers became isolated and winds eased.

"It's still windy outside but we're not likely to see the damaging wind gusts," Mr Carlyon said.

However, he said the winds would pick up again on Monday and Tuesday, with another strong active cold front due.

A few showers are expected for Monday, becoming more widespread on Tuesday.

But sunny days are ahead.

"It looks like a fine weekend coming up," Mr Carlyon said.

Victorians were earlier warned to brace for wild weather on Sunday.

Melbourne was struck with winds of up to 85km/h in the morning, with gusts up to 100 km/h earlier  expected across the state.

"The wind has been fairly gusty," Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Richard Carlyon said.

"We're expecting some stronger winds in the late morning and early afternoon.

"In the Alpine region and right up to the Mallee we have that prediction."

State Emergency Service spokesman Stefan Delatovic said members were on high alert for call outs.

"They're all ready to go and we'd be asking Victorians to do the same," he said.

Mr Delatovic advised people to clear out gutters, tie down loose items and drive to the conditions.

"Avoid driving in wild weather," he said.

"One of the biggest impacts is trees on the road. They can cause a big encounter if you come across them."

The expected weather and two fatal car crashes has prompted Ambulance Victoria to also issue a warning.

"We're asking people to drive to the conditions," spokesman John Mullen said.

"Take extra caution on the roads, because we've got conditions where the roads become a lot wetter and greasier.

"Where you may have been able to drive at 100 to 110 km/h, you can't drive at those speeds."

Melbourne has had 8.2 millimetres of rain Sunday morning, while 22.2 has fallen on Ferny Creek in the Dandenongs.

Meanwhile, 87 millimetres has bucketed down on Mount Hotham and 54 on Mount Buller since 9am on Saturday.

"The north-east ranges have had the highest rain in the state," Mr Carlyon said.

Winds have already reached more than 100km/h in the Alpine region.

A maximum of 15 degrees is forecast for Melbourne on Sunday.
